1. Affinity

Best free option. Combine photo editing, vector illustration and page layout. The Pixel studio includes RAW development, retouching and live filters.

$0 on Mac and Windows. A free Canva account is required. Core tools and updates are free; Canva AI needs a premium plan. Get Affinity.

2. GIMP

Best free open-source option. GIMP offers layers, masks, painting, retouching and filters on Mac, Windows and Linux, with community extensions for specialized tasks.

$0, with no subscription. Download it from GIMP’s official site.

3. CameraBag Photo

Best for film looks and presets across many photos. Start with a photographic treatment, adjust color and tone, then reuse it across a batch. Choose Photo for still images; Pro adds video.

$24 direct from Nevercenter, before optional promotions, as confirmed in its purchase form. This perpetual license includes one year of updates; extensions are optional. The Mac App Store edition uses a subscription. Seven-day trial and direct purchase.

4. Artfkt

Best for experimental effects, motion, and posters. Let a soundtrack push a photo’s texture, place solid lettering beside a model, and export a moving cover.

  • Audio-driven motion: import a separate soundtrack; use its energy, detected hits or a manually aligned beat grid to drive layers and effects. Explore audio motion.
  • Editable 3D type and models: shape lettering, materials and depth in a shared scene. See the text tools.
  • The full effects library: 46 collections and 361 effects, all included, from print textures to glass and metallic surfaces.
  • MP4, WebM and GIF export, with editable social templates. Sound in MP4/WebM depends on device encoding support; GIF is silent.

$39 once, or $29 at launch, including all 1.x updates; future major upgrades are excluded. Requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 13+ or a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC. Artfkt isn’t a RAW or retouching editor—pair it with Affinity or Pixelmator for that work.

Try effects free; audio motion, 3D editing and saved projects require the desktop app. Get the same $29 offer with this article’s COMPARE code, which helps us attribute purchases from this guide.

5. Acorn 8

Best lightweight Photoshop alternative. Use familiar layers, selections, text and shapes alongside nondestructive filters, healing and object removal. It suits focused Mac photo edits and small graphic compositions.

$29.99 from Flying Meat’s direct store, with updates within the purchased major version; later major upgrades are optional. Acorn 8 requires macOS 14+. 14-day trial.

6. Pixelmator Pro

Best all-round Mac editor. Combine photo adjustments, retouching, masks, vector shapes and text in a polished Mac workspace. It’s a broad choice for finishing photographs and building layered graphics.

$49.99 for the one-time Mac App Store edition. Features such as Warp are Apple Creator Studio-only; the standalone purchase excludes the subscription’s iPad app. Compare Apple’s editions.

7. DxO FilmPack 8

Best for dedicated premium film emulation. Reproduce analog film color, grain and black-and-white character with a tool focused on photographic looks.

$149.99 for a lifetime version license, on Mac and Windows, with up to three activations; future upgrades cost extra. Mac requires macOS 14.7+. Check FilmPack’s offer and requirements. For a workflow comparison that also includes Artfkt’s authored camera and film looks, see film emulation software for Mac and Windows.

What does “without a subscription” include?

It means the route listed here needs no recurring payment for its included tools. Updates can be limited to a version or a time window, and optional services may cost extra. For what Artfkt’s own desktop purchase adds over its free demo, see why use Artfkt desktop. Before paying, use this four-question checklist:

  • Which edition and platform are included? Match the offer to your computer. Acorn is Mac-only, and Artfkt runs on Apple Silicon Macs and 64-bit Windows PCs; the Pixelmator price here covers its standalone Mac edition.
  • Which updates are included? Artfkt includes 1.x updates, Acorn covers its purchased major version, and CameraBag includes one year. A perpetual license does not promise every future upgrade.
  • Do any features require another plan? Affinity's Canva AI tools require Canva premium. Pixelmator's Warp Tool requires Apple Creator Studio. Choose the edition with the features you need.
  • Can I export and reopen an editable project? Test your intended export format and save-and-reopen workflow. Artfkt's browser demo exports, while saved projects, audio motion, and solid 3D text require the desktop app.
