Fieldwork

Give images the structure of flowing matter

Fieldwork reshapes image information into flowing material: marbled folds, circulating pools, branching ridges, fine threads, and soft cellular boundaries.

Begin with photographic color in Image appearance, or choose Graphic for a controlled Ink, Paper, and Accent palette. The geometry and the palette are separate creative decisions.

Choose a flow with a recognizable structure

Marbled Ink pulls source colors into folds and fine veins. Stream Threads rebuilds detail from marks carried along a curved field. Sediment Ridges gathers color into branching ridges and layered bands. Each offers a different scale of organization, from broad folded areas to narrow strands.

Use broad source color divisions when you want to see the path of the transformation. A field with little color or tonal variation may produce an interesting surface but fewer recognizable currents. Decide whether the original subject should remain visible or become raw material for an abstract composition.

Contrast quiet pools with connected boundaries

Eddy Pools circulates separate regions around relatively quiet centers. Cellular Membrane bends detail through soft cells with raised translucent boundaries. Compare them when you want the image divided into local events rather than swept in a single direction.

The intervals between those events are part of the design. Make cells or pools too small and the image may read as a uniform texture; make them larger and each region can become a focal shape. Keep some difference between the scale of the subject and the scale of the field.

Let the source or a small palette lead

Image appearance retains the photographic color language. Graphic appearance organizes the treatment around Ink, Paper, and Accent, which is useful when the source colors compete with a poster or cover palette. Establish the flow first so a palette change does not hide an unresolved geometry choice.

For motion, Loop fits procedural movement to the composition duration and an integer Cycles count. Upstream changes and parameter animation must also repeat if the whole composition is meant to loop. Judge the moving structure after the still balance is established, especially where fine threads can become visually busy.

Creative applications

  • Build a marbled cover background from a photograph’s existing color divisions.
  • Develop a three-color graphic series using the same field structure with coordinated Ink, Paper, and Accent choices.
  • Create an organic motion study with distinct pools or cells and quiet space around a title.

Starting workflow

  1. For a marbled poster background, choose a source with two or three broad color regions and some light-dark separation.
  2. Apply Marbled Ink in Image appearance. Adjust the folding field scale until broad folds and fine veins are both visible.
  3. Check whether the flow leaves a quieter region for typography. Change the source crop if every part competes equally.
  4. Switch to Graphic if a controlled palette suits the design better, then choose Ink, Paper, and Accent to preserve the tonal hierarchy.
  5. For a moving version, enable Loop and inspect a full composition cycle with other animation held steady before adding more changes.

Make it part of your next composition.
