Fractals

Find worlds within your image

Five mathematical instruments turn source imagery into structures that repeat across scales.

Use generous space and legible fragments for contemplative compositions, or increase depth, transformation and motion for visionary artwork.

Follow an image into finer structure

Julia Weave turns source fragments into curling filaments and islands. Move Morph slowly while holding Zoom steady, then magnify a region whose large shapes already feel balanced. Root Bloom gathers texture around convergence regions and their intricate interfaces; Bloom and Boundary width let you change that balance together.

A photograph with broad color regions makes these transformations easier to read. Fine detail supplies texture, while recognizable pieces of the original give the viewer something to return to. Keep essential lettering on a separate layer if it needs to remain legible.

Compose with the spaces between forms

Circle Sanctuary places image fragments inside tangent disks at several scales. Depth reveals smaller disks while Inset separates them. Branching Light grows an image-textured canopy through successive generations. Growth controls how far it develops; Spread decides how open the branching becomes.

Recursive Lace cuts repeating apertures through the image. Opening changes the coverage and Depth adds finer openings. Start with a generous silhouette before adding detail. These effects create transparent regions, which makes them useful for layering over another image or a deliberate background.

Move from a quiet composition to a visionary treatment

For a contemplative treatment, keep the main structure clear, leave space around it and use restrained motion. For a denser treatment, explore geometry and source scale together, then add detail. A change in structure has more impact than simply filling every available space.

Compose a still with Phase first. Enable composition Motion and FX Animate, then Play to see intrinsic evolution. Loop fits Cycles to the composition duration; Free uses the fixed Rate. For more directed movement, animate Phase and a shape control with separate lanes. Watch the complete cycle, particularly when transparent cutouts or several effects are stacked.

Creative applications

  • Create an intricate album cover from an ordinary photograph.
  • Build source-textured branching cutouts for layered posters.
  • Animate recursive patterns using fitted loops and per-control modulation.

Starting workflow

  1. Choose a source with distinct color regions and fine detail.
  2. Start with an effect’s first control, then adjust the scale of its geometry and source image separately.
  3. Compare a quiet composition with a densely detailed treatment.
  4. Enable Motion and FX Animate for intrinsic movement; keep Phase manual for still compositions.

Make it part of your next composition.
