Music Visualizer Software for Mac: Choose Your Workflow
Compare Artfkt, Specterr, Magic Music Visuals and Synesthesia by the work you want to make, with a real Artfkt audio-reactive example and official sources.
TL;DR
- Choose a visualizer around the result you need: moving artwork, a template video, a modular composition, or live visuals.
- Artfkt uses a soundtrack or live audio to drive image effects and layer motion in the desktop app.
- Check the required output and trial restrictions; competitor coverage comes from official documentation rather than hands-on comparative testing.

Choose music visualizer software by what you want to finish: a moving piece of artwork, a template-based music video, a custom visual composition, or visuals you perform live. Those jobs lead to different tools.
| Your task | Starting point |
|---|---|
| Animate or perform with artwork | Artfkt: effects and audio-driven layer motion, with file or live audio. |
| Customize a music-video template | Specterr: browser presets and cloud rendering. |
| Build a modular composition | Magic Music Visuals: graphics, media and audio inputs, with file or live output. |
| Perform visuals live | Synesthesia: reactive scenes and live controls for a show or stream. |
Disclosure: this comparison is written by Artfkt. The artwork and video below are real Artfkt outputs. Specterr, Magic and Synesthesia were researched through their official documentation, not installed or tested hands-on. Research checked 26 October 2026. Prices are listed in US dollars where verified; check the linked vendor pages before buying. This is a workflow comparison, not a performance benchmark or an overall ranking.
If your main goal is a live performance, our VJ software guide compares Artfkt, Resolume and Synesthesia and walks through artwork, sound input and clean output.
Artfkt: start with a picture you want to animate
Choose Artfkt when the image itself is the project: a cover, a poster, a collage or a visual experiment. Bring in artwork, add editable text, and use a soundtrack or live audio to drive effects or layer motion. You can keep the type still while the image responds to different frequency bands.
Artfkt is a native app for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later, and a Windows version runs on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PCs. It works with local media and saved projects. For a composed video, import a separate WAV, MP3 or supported AAC M4A soundtrack and export an MP4 with sound when your device supports encoding. It also retains supported original video sound and can detach it as an independent audio track. Tempo is not detected automatically.
For live work, open Animate → Sound input. Listen to computer audio on macOS 14.2 or later, or to a physical or virtual input device on macOS 13 or later. The computer source is a mixed system input, so other app sounds can be included.
A multichannel device can route Master and up to seven named inputs to animation controls; separate instruments require separate channels from your setup. Show the artwork in a clean output window and record the running show with its configured Master mix to an H.264/AAC MP4. Hardware and codec support depend on your setup. See the live-performance FAQ for the boundaries.
Artfkt runs alongside music software rather than as an audio plug-in. It does not provide MIDI or music-app tempo synchronization, individual-app computer-audio capture, or automatic separation of instruments from a mixed song. A live recording is a finished video; ordinary timeline export does not replay live-only assignments.
The free browser effects demo is a way to explore treatments and procedural motion. Soundtrack authoring and live audio require the desktop app; the demo is not an audio-workflow trial. Artfkt’s purchase includes current collections and 1.x updates, with future major upgrades excluded. Use the configured purchase action below for the current offer and checkout terms.
A real Artfkt example: NIGHT SIGNAL
This original 1200 × 1200 composition combines geometric artwork with separate, editable Inter lettering. Here it is before motion and RGB Split:

Artfkt example only. Original geometry and editable lettering; no competitor output is shown.
Press play with sound. A 12-second, 120-BPM original synthesized passage drives the artwork. The page copy is 720 × 720, 30 fps, H.264 with AAC, compressed from the 1200 × 1200 Artfkt export. This is an Artfkt demonstration, not a comparative benchmark.
The low-band Energy signal drives the image layer’s Scale from 100% to 108%. High-band Energy drives RGB Split Amount from 0 to 0.02, with Angle at 0°. Both responses use a 0.005-second attack and 0.10-second release. The lettering stays stationary. Low kicks and high percussion make the two movements distinguishable; a frequency band is not an isolated instrument stem.
The composition lasts 12 seconds at 30 fps. Its BPM is set to 120, but these Energy responses follow the sound rather than the beat grid. Follow the audio-reactive artwork tutorial for importing a track, choosing a passage, mapping signals and exporting with audio.
Specterr: customize a preset in your browser
Specterr is a browser service usable on a Mac, rather than a native Mac application. Its official visualizer guide describes choosing a preset, uploading an MP3 or WAV, adding images and text, then downloading a server-rendered video. The editor previews the uploaded track’s response. Media is uploaded and rendering happens in the cloud.
This is a useful alternative when a preset spectrum, waveform or particle design is the starting point you want. You customize an existing video design instead of constructing Artfkt’s layered artwork treatment. Live microphone input and live external-video routing were not verified. A precise minimum macOS/browser version and the downloaded video container were also not verified in the reviewed pages.
The pricing page lists a free plan with one video per day, 720p at 30 fps, a five-minute limit and a watermark; free videos expire after ten days. The yearly view lists Pro at $198/year (displayed as $16.50/month), with 60 videos per year and 1080p at 60 fps. Unlimited is $588/year (displayed as $49/month), with 4K at 60 fps. Those are annual commitments, not verified monthly-billing prices. A single-video purchase is also offered; its price was not verified. This is a hosted service with plan limits, not a perpetual desktop license with a major-version update entitlement.
Magic Music Visuals: compose with modules
Magic is a native Mac application for building visuals from modules. Its feature list covers images, video, 3D models, generated shapes, multiple audio files and live audio inputs. Both editions offer fullscreen output and MP4/MOV or PNG-sequence export. Performer adds MIDI/OSC controls and Syphon routing on Mac.
Consider Magic when you want to construct the visual system itself or combine several inputs. Studio is the relevant starting comparison for authored videos; Performer is the relevant edition for the additional live-control and routing features. Local media and hardware inputs are part of its documented workflow. We did not test individual file formats or routing configurations.
The current download page lists macOS 10.12 or later. Native Apple Silicon support was not verified; check your exact machine with the vendor. Its demo disables saving and adds an output watermark after 30 days.
Purchase terms list Studio $44.95 and Performer $79.95, each for one computer, with free updates throughout v2. Studio requires an internet connection at least every 30 days; Performer can operate offline after activation, according to the feature page.
Synesthesia: play scenes live
Synesthesia is a native Mac application built around real-time reactive scenes. Its feature documentation describes live audio analysis, adjustable scenes, MIDI control, imported video/images/webcams, and custom shader scenes. It produces live output for projection or streaming. Pro adds OSC and full video-routing support; on Mac, check Syphon/NDI capabilities for your intended setup.
Choose this direction when a reactive scene library, MIDI control or dedicated performance routing suits your show. A self-contained MP4 export workflow was not verified for this comparison. Do not assume that live output means the same thing as an encoded video file with a soundtrack.
The current download page lists macOS 10.15+ and Apple Silicon support. We use that current listing rather than the older requirements still present in some documentation. Its unlimited trial watermarks the output.
Pricing lists Standard $199 and Pro $399, with perpetual licenses. The published terms include one year of updates and optional $60 annual update renewals, but the page currently says update restrictions are not enforced and updates remain free. Licenses must sync online at least once every 30 days. Imported media is used in the application; this review did not audit its network behavior.
Decide by the file—or performance—you need
For artwork-led motion, try the Artfkt recipe above with your own image and soundtrack, or explore its live-input workflow for a performance. For a preset-based release video with cloud rendering, inspect Specterr’s templates and export allowances. For modular construction and multiple inputs, compare Magic’s editions. For live scenes and performance routing, investigate Synesthesia with your actual audio and display setup. For a short looping visual rather than a full video, see the Spotify Canvas guide or make a hypnotic spiral loop from your artwork.
Before paying, check your Mac, the media you intend to use, the required output, and the trial restrictions. None of the examples here measures learning time or rendering speed across tools. Artfkt’s production renderer and export pipeline produced the illustrated result.
Make something unexpected
Make your artwork respond to your soundtrack.
Bring your image and a song into Artfkt for Mac and Windows. Shape the response, save an editable project, and export your moving artwork. One purchase includes all current collections and 1.x updates; future major upgrades are excluded.
