How to Make a Spotify Canvas from Your Album Art on Mac
Turn your album cover into an 8-second Spotify Canvas loop that moves to your song's beat. Exact BPM-to-loop timings, export settings, and a matching Reel from the same project.
TL;DR
- Reframe existing album art vertically, give one control restrained motion, and export a silent Spotify Canvas.
- Use the desktop project for a second social-video export with sound, checking the loop’s join and the destination’s current requirements.
- Align the beat grid manually; a muted Canvas does not stay synchronized with Spotify playback, and Repeat does not guarantee a seamless join.

A Spotify Canvas is a 3–8 second vertical loop shown behind your track in Spotify. You don’t need footage: start with your existing album cover, give one control a subtle pulse, and export a silent 9:16 MP4. This guide uses Artfkt for Mac and Windows, then reuses the same project for a Reel with sound.
The real export: 7.2 seconds, 576 × 1024, 30 fps, no audio. The motion is deliberately restrained.
Spotify Canvas specs at a glance
Spotify’s Canvas guidelines and upload troubleshooting currently specify:
| Spec | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Video length | 3–8 seconds |
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 vertical |
| Height | 720–1080 px |
| File type | MP4 or still JPG |
| Sound | Spotify supplies your track; export silent video |
Artfkt’s Spotify Canvas preset uses 576 × 1024. The 1080 × 1920 Reels size is a separate output; it exceeds the height stated on Spotify’s current support pages.
Avoid rapid cuts and intense flashing. Keep important details away from edges, skip footage of talking or singing that would need lip sync, and usually leave out artist and track names because Spotify already displays them. Spotify also restricts promotional URLs, sales messages, social-follow requests and brand promotion, including Spotify’s logo. Read the content policy and mark explicit content appropriately during upload.
What you need
- A square cover, ideally at least 1080 px on its short side
- One separate WAV, MP3, or supported AAC M4A soundtrack for this walkthrough. Artfkt can also retain or detach supported video audio.
- The BPM from your DAW or another reliable source; Artfkt has no automatic tempo detection
- Artfkt for an Apple Silicon Mac (macOS 13 or later) or a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC
Allow about 30 minutes to follow along. That is a planning estimate, not a measured learning time. Our example uses a 1600 × 1600 cover and a 100 BPM passage from Chill Wave.
Step 1: Pick a loop length that lands on the bar
Whole bars give the authored motion a deliberate rhythmic phrase. They do not keep a muted Canvas synchronized with Spotify playback, and Spotify does not require them.
In 4/4, one bar lasts 240 ÷ BPM seconds. These are the longest whole-bar phrases at or below eight seconds:
| Tempo (BPM) | Bars | Loop length |
|---|---|---|
| 80 | 2 | 6.00 s |
| 90 | 3 | 8.00 s |
| 100 | 3 | 7.20 s |
| 110 | 3 | 6.55 s |
| 120 | 4 | 8.00 s |
| 128 | 4 | 7.50 s |
| 140 | 4 | 6.86 s |
| 170 | 5 | 7.06 s |
For another tempo, calculate bars = floor(BPM ÷ 30), then seconds = bars × 240 ÷ BPM. If no whole bar fits, use a shorter musical phrase within Spotify’s 3–8 second limit. Other time signatures need their own bar calculation. The displayed timings are rounded; use the unrounded value when setting an exact phrase.
For this example, click the timeline’s end-time control, Timeline duration (s), enter 7.2, and confirm. Open the Timeline settings gear beside the footer clock and set Tempo: 100 BPM, Simulation FPS: 30, Playback speed: 1×, and Timeline completion: Repeat.
Step 2: Extend the square cover to 9:16
Select Document in Layers. In Inspector, choose Canvas preset → Spotify Canvas. Select your image again, then choose Fill canvas in Image size. This example uses one Cover image layer, centered at X: 0, Y: 0, Rotation: 0°, with uniform scale 64%: its 1600 px square becomes 1024 px tall and the sides crop to the 576 px canvas.
This full-bleed approach suits abstract artwork. If the crop loses important detail, use a background color and a smaller cover, or duplicate the image behind it and blur the background. A Color Flow background is another creative option in the desktop app.
Keep the focal point toward the center. A middle-60% composition is a useful starting heuristic, not an official Spotify safe area; Spotify supplies no numeric safe margin on its guidelines page.
Step 3: Add one restrained treatment
Select Cover and add Light → Bloom. Set:
- Strength: 0.35
- Spread: 1.20%
- Highlight threshold: 0.35
Bloom spreads the bright pink edges into a soft halo while preserving the dark background. Keep the treatment comfortable over repeated viewing. Film grain, Atmosphere haze, or restrained Refraction are alternatives; the example uses only Bloom.
Step 4: Drive the motion with your track
Open Audio → Soundtrack and import the separate song file. Choose the passage on the waveform or enter its start and end. Our Chill Wave example uses Passage start (seconds): 16.23, Passage end (seconds): 23.43, Composition start (seconds): 0, Repeat soundtrack: on, Loop crossfade (seconds): 0, and both fades at 0 s.
Align First beat in track (seconds) to 16.23 in the original track. The grid uses the manually entered 100 BPM. Check your own passage against its waveform and by listening; do not copy this offset to another track.
Open the motion accessory for Bloom’s Strength, choose Audio, and set Audio signal: Beat grid, Beat subdivision: 1, Sensitivity: 1, Threshold: 0, Attack (seconds): 0, Release (seconds): 0.15, and Response curve: 1. Set the control’s response range to 0.35 → 0.65. Turn on Composition motion and the effect’s motion gate.
Energy follows broad swells; Hits follows detected onsets; Beat grid follows your manually aligned clock. This example chooses the predictable grid and moves only one control through a narrow range.

0.00 s, 0.30 s and 3.60 s. The first and halfway frames land on beats; the middle frame shows the glow after release.
The Canvas plays muted and won’t stay locked to the track. Its motion shares the song’s rhythm because it was built from the song’s own beat grid. The sound-on social export is where the motion and soundtrack share a playback clock.

Step 5: Export the Canvas (silent MP4)
Open Export and select Export preset → Spotify Canvas. Verify:
- File type: MP4, 576 × 1024, Frame rate: 30
- Full timeline: 7.20 s, 216 frames, with playback speed 1×
- Include soundtrack: off; the preset starts silent while audio-driven visuals still evaluate
The preset fills in those settings, and you can change them. Spotify still expects a 3–8 second MP4 or JPG. If your composition is longer, enable Custom time range and select a 3–8 second range. Quick Export uses the full timeline, so set the timeline first or use Export’s range controls in the desktop app.
Watch the export on repeat and inspect the join. Repeat does not guarantee a seamless image. Our pulse has a visible beat transition at the join; it is not a seamless-loop demonstration. Spotify’s Continuous Loop and Hard Cut preserve forward motion. Rebound plays forward and then backward, smoothing a discontinuity but also reversing the rhythmic sequence.
Upload from the track’s page in Spotify for Artists. Final acceptance is Spotify’s decision; this example has not been uploaded to an artist account.
Step 6: Reuse the project for Reels and Shorts
Save your project first. Extend Timeline duration to 21.6 seconds: nine bars at 100 BPM. Keep the 7.2-second passage repeating, then choose Export preset → Instagram Reels / Stories, 1080 × 1920, 30 fps, and turn Include soundtrack on.
The second export contains the soundtrack and the same audio-driven visuals. A shorter 7.2-second excerpt works as a promotional clip; its caption can link here. Keep promotional text out of the actual Spotify Canvas. See When One Image Becomes a Series for reusing a visual treatment.
Can I try this before buying?
Partly. The free browser demo offers effect stacking, 9:16 canvas sizing, procedural presets such as Slow Drift and Sine Pulse, and Quick Export. It includes selected collections, so test a look using its available effects; it does not reproduce this desktop Bloom-and-soundtrack example. Soundtrack-driven motion, saved projects, the full collection library, and full Export previews/ranges need Artfkt for Mac and Windows.
FAQ
How long should a Spotify Canvas be?
Between 3 and 8 seconds. For a rhythmic design in 4/4, choose whole bars: 8 seconds at 120 BPM or 7.2 seconds at 100 BPM. Whole bars are a creative choice, not a Spotify requirement, and do not synchronize Canvas playback with your track.
What size is a Spotify Canvas?
Spotify currently specifies 9:16 and 720–1080 pixels tall. Artfkt’s Spotify Canvas preset uses 576 × 1024. TikTok, Instagram Reels / Stories, Facebook Reels, and YouTube Shorts use 1080 × 1920; choose the matching name for social video.
Does a Spotify Canvas need sound?
No. Spotify supplies your track. Artfkt’s Spotify Canvas preset starts with the soundtrack off while retaining soundtrack-driven visual motion.
Can I make a Spotify Canvas from a still image?
Yes. Compose your cover in 9:16, add subtle motion, and export a 3–8 second MP4. You do not need video footage.
Can I make an audio-reactive visualizer on Mac without a subscription?
Yes. Artfkt is a one-time purchase. Import a WAV, MP3, or supported AAC M4A soundtrack and drive controls with energy, detected hits, or a manual beat grid. Export supported MP4 or WebM with sound. Audio motion requires the desktop app on an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 13 or later, or a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC.
Why does my Canvas loop look jumpy?
A difference between the last and first frame can reveal the seam. Inspect repeated playback, adjust the motion, or choose Rebound during Spotify upload. Rebound reverses the clip, which also reverses its rhythmic motion. Whole-bar timing alone does not fix a visual seam or synchronize Spotify playback.
