To turn a photo into a pencil sketch online, open it in Artfkt’s free browser demo, apply Pencil Sketch from the Drawing collection, and adjust the strength and size of the marks. Export a PNG when the drawing feels right. You can complete this workflow in the browser, without installing Photoshop or buying the desktop app.

Try Pencil Sketch on your photo →

Start with a photograph you already like: a plant on a windowsill, a piece of architecture, a still life, or a portrait you have permission to use. The effect follows the picture’s light and dark areas, turning them into graphite-like shading. You keep control of the original composition.

1. Choose a photo with room for the marks

Look for a recognizable subject, clear edges, and some quieter space around it. A crowded background becomes drawing texture too. If every part of the photograph is equally busy, try a simpler crop before adding more strength.

The tulip photograph below is the source for the sketch at the top of this page. The larger flowers in front remain recognizable, while the soft-focus flowers behind them become lighter patches of texture. Follow one foreground flower through the two images to judge how much shape survives. We kept the same framing in both.

For your first attempt, use a JPG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC image. Open the demo on a laptop or desktop with a current browser and hardware acceleration enabled. Images you choose are processed on your device; they are not uploaded for editing. The privacy policy explains website analytics separately.

2. Open Pencil Sketch and add your image

Follow the Pencil Sketch demo link, then choose your file or drop it into the editor. The link starts with Pencil Sketch on the Document stack, where it treats the combined composition. Click Pencil Sketch in the layer panel to open its controls. If you are already exploring the demo, you can instead select your image layer and add the effect from Drawing.

Begin with just this one effect. Keep playback paused and the effect’s motion off while you judge a still drawing. These are the starting settings used by the sketch at the top:

  • Pencil strength: 1.25
  • Detail scale: 0.008
  • Grain: 0.35
  • Ink: #252323
  • Paper: #f1e9db
  • Mix: 100%

The result retains shading inside the leaves and petals. It is a textured drawing treatment, so small photographic details can merge into marks. If you want a simpler contour image, try Ink Outline in the same collection instead.

3. Balance darkness, detail, and paper texture

Change one control at a time so you can tell what helped.

Pencil strength controls the graphite tone. Lower it when shadows become a solid mass; raise it when the subject is too faint. Watch a dark leaf or an overlapping edge, rather than judging only the empty background.

Detail scale changes the size of the marks. Smaller values give a finer treatment. Larger values make the directional strokes more visible and can simplify small features. Check the drawing at the size you plan to share it: marks that look distinct when enlarged may merge in a small card or cover.

Grain breaks up the graphite. Reduce it for clearer stroke direction, or increase it for a rougher paper-tooth texture. Set the main mark size first, then add texture until it supports the subject.

There is a useful difference between Pencil strength and Mix. Strength at zero leaves the paper color. Mix at zero brings back the untreated photograph. Use Mix to compare the treatment with your source, then return it to 100% for the full drawing effect. Intermediate values blend the photo and sketch.

4. Choose the ink and paper colors

The example uses dark charcoal-colored ink on warm cream paper. Try black ink on white paper for a cleaner study, or change the ink to a deep blue for a small illustrated card. Keep enough contrast for the finer strokes to remain visible.

These colors belong to the effect, so you can revise them without starting the conversion again. Compare the lightest petals with the background after a color change; similar tones can make their edges harder to read.

5. Add a title, or export the drawing as it is

For a card, cover, or small poster, add a separate Text layer above the photograph. To keep the lettering clean, Pencil Sketch needs to belong to the image’s stack. If you started from the demo link, remove it from Document, select the image layer, and add Pencil Sketch from Drawing there instead. Reapply your chosen settings, then add the text. The editable text guide explains the layer workflow.

The browser demo supports layers without a count limit and includes editable text and export. You can use one image and one title without needing the desktop app.

Choose Export → PNG in the browser demo (Quick Export → PNG in the desktop app) to download your still. Open the exported image and inspect both the fine marks and the overall silhouette at its intended display size. If the drawing looks muddy when small, return to the controls and reduce Pencil strength or adjust Detail scale before exporting again.

Common questions

Can I turn a photo into a drawing for free?

Yes. Pencil Sketch, its controls, and still-image export are included in Artfkt’s free browser demo. Start with your own photo.

Is this a pencil drawing or a vector tracing?

It is a raster image effect that interprets your photograph as graphite-like marks. It does not create editable vector paths or reproduce the process of drawing by hand. Use the PNG as finished artwork or as an image in another composition.

Why does my sketch have too much background detail?

The effect treats the whole image, including objects behind the subject. Start from a simpler crop, reduce Pencil strength, and try a larger Detail scale. If the subject still competes with its surroundings, choose a photograph with clearer separation.

When would I use the Artfkt desktop app?

Use the desktop app when you want to save an editable project or combine Drawing with the full collection library. The Artfkt desktop app requires an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 13 or later, or a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 PC. Browser export is already included; moving to desktop lets you save and revisit the editable composition.

Make a drawing from a photo you care about

Open Pencil Sketch and choose your photo →

Start with the default treatment, change Pencil strength, then compare the result with the original using Mix. That gives you a concrete first decision before exploring the rest of the controls.

For broader dark marks, explore Charcoal in the Drawing collection. For soft color instead of graphite, follow the watercolor painting tutorial. For a rougher printed image, follow the Photocopy effect tutorial. For banknote-style parallel lines, see the engraving effect tutorial.

How the examples were made

The before-and-after images reuse Artfkt’s production Drawing previews: the same photograph and framing, rendered at 1707 × 2560 with Pencil Sketch’s default settings at time zero. The recorded renderer was WebGPU; appearance can vary by device and display size. The website serves resized versions of these images. The sketch is an Artfkt effect render.
