VHS

Worn recordings, bootleg copies and damaged playback

VHS separates the recording character and playback faults of a tape-like image. Begin with limited signal detail and restrained noise, then decide whether the picture should feel like a home recording, a worn copy, or damaged playback.

Use the collection in Artfkt to control brightness detail, color behavior, and mechanical instability independently. A believable tape direction does not require every fault at once.

Build the recording before damaging it

Signal Bandwidth softens brightness and color information separately, with color bleed and delay. Chroma Bleed spreads color while retaining sharper luminance detail. Luma Smear adds directional brightness tails after strong edges. These treatments change the image’s underlying signal character before obvious dropouts appear.

Compare fine lettering, a strong bright edge, and a broad colored area while adjusting. Their different responses help distinguish limited detail from a uniformly blurred picture. Use a source with enough structure to make those differences visible.

Choose a specific kind of tape failure

Tape Jitter offsets individual rows, Tape Warp introduces broader wow and flutter, and Tape Skew pulls an edge into a curved timing error. Head Switching confines ragged damage near the bottom. Tracking and Tape Shuttle create more conspicuous interference bands; Shuttle changes the appearance of search playback without reversing the source media.

Chroma Loss removes color in seeded horizontal regions while retaining luminance. Chroma Noise adds color variation independently of brightness noise. Tape Dropout and Tape Scratches introduce other forms of lost signal. Choose the fault that supports the composition rather than treating these as interchangeable distress.

Keep recording and display decisions separate

A VHS treatment describes the recording and its playback behavior. CRT effects describe the display surface, with phosphor structure, glow, and curvature. You can combine the two in Artfkt, but a tape-like image does not have to be framed inside a tube screen.

Judge a restrained still state before adding recurring failure. Native rate or speed controls can hold a pattern at zero, while Seed changes placement and amount strengthens the same realization. During motion, look for recovery as well as damage so the subject has time to become recognizable again.

Effects in VHS

14 effects to explore and combine.

Chroma Noise processed image preview

Chroma Noise

Scatter independently seeded color variations through an otherwise stable image.

Tape Jitter processed image preview

Tape Jitter

Give image rows fine horizontal timing offsets. Line coherence connects neighboring errors; Jitter amount stays in input pixels. Use Tape Warp for broader transport movement.

Tape Scratches processed image preview

Tape Scratches

Scatter thin magnetic dropouts with a controlled count and maximum length in pixels. Blend pale lost signal with random static inside each mark.

Tracking processed image preview

Tracking

Drag a moving band of horizontal tears and interference through the picture.

Chroma Bleed processed image preview

Chroma Bleed

Smear color horizontally while retaining sharp luminance detail.

Tape Noise processed image preview

Tape Noise

Add fine signal noise with horizontal line correlation.

Tape Warp processed image preview

Tape Warp

Bend horizontal timing with smooth tape wow and flutter.

Head Switching processed image preview

Head Switching

Confine ragged horizontal timing damage to the bottom of the screen.

Tape Dropout processed image preview

Tape Dropout

Break the signal into intermittent thin horizontal streaks.

Signal Bandwidth processed image preview

Signal Bandwidth

Soften luminance and the two analog color signals independently, then add vertical color bleed and horizontal chroma delay.

Tape Skew processed image preview

Tape Skew

Pull an edge into a curved timing error with seeded mechanical settling, independently of full-frame tape warp.

Luma Smear processed image preview

Luma Smear

Smear luminance after high-contrast edges while retaining the source color difference and coverage. A directional response for dubbed-tape looks.

Chroma Loss processed image preview

Chroma Loss

Seeded horizontal regions lose chroma independently of image brightness. Tune how long the color interruptions persist and how much of the frame they reach.

Tape Shuttle processed image preview

Tape Shuttle

Coordinate multiple cue/review interference bands, local line tearing and chroma loss. Signed travel changes band direction; it does not reverse source media.

Creative applications

  • Give a contemporary photograph a restrained home-video recording character.
  • Develop a dubbed-copy cover image through separate brightness and color degradation.
  • Create a moving sequence that alternates readable playback with a specific tape fault.

Starting workflow

  1. For a worn-copy study, choose a source with strong colored regions and a clear bright edge.
  2. Start with Signal Bandwidth and modest Tape Noise to establish the underlying recording character.
  3. Add Luma Smear and balance Smear with Tail length while inspecting the bright edge.
  4. Compare a restrained Chroma Bleed addition before introducing mechanical movement or dropouts.
  5. Check the subject at final size. If making a moving version, vary one fault deliberately and watch the recovery rather than leaving every control at an extreme.

Make it part of your next composition.
